Petra Velix
Petra Nexus is a cutting-edge research facility dedicated to geological studies, located on the outskirts of Calgary. This striking concrete structure emerges from the landscape like a modern-day megalith, its form inspired by the layered sedimentary rocks it was built to study.
Petra Nexus stands as a monument to modernist architecture, its raw concrete form both contrasting and complementing the rugged terrain surrounding it. The complex features a series of interconnected structures, including a dramatic curved entrance that appears to emerge from the earth, leading to a cavernous interior space. Large concrete walls with board-formed textures create a play of light and shadow throughout the day, while strategic openings frame views of the sky and landscape.
The design incorporates multiple levels and outdoor areas, including wide concrete steps and platforms that serve as gathering spaces. A key feature is the integration of water elements, from reflective pools that mirror the structure to streams that flow through sculpted concrete channels, blurring the line between architecture and nature. Inside, the building opens up to reveal multi-story spaces with abundant natural light, showcasing the versatility of concrete in creating both monumental and intimate areas within the same complex.
